Huria Al-Siyaghi · Female Farmer Lot · Natural · Yemenia · Hijrat Al Ain, Hayma Dakhiliya, Sana'a
Huria Al-Siyaghi has been growing coffee for forty five years. She learned it beside her family, and she learned all of it: not only the harvest, but the planting and the irrigation, the parts of the year that decide what there will be to pick.
Her household is twenty two people and every one of them works in agriculture. Between them they tend around four hundred mature trees. Coffee is what the family lives on, and this year the water ran short, which in Hijrat Al Ain is the difference between a good season and a thin one.
The village is one of the oldest settled communities in Hayma Dakhiliya, its terraces cut between 2,000 and 2,300 metres, in a region that sees only 250 to 400 millimetres of rain a year. Women have always done much of the cultivation here, and it shows in the auction record: the women farmers of Hijrat Al Ain took third place in the Best of Yemen in 2025, and eighth the year before that.
Huria credits the auction with changing how the family farms. It gave them a reason to plant more trees and to be stricter at harvest, taking only the fully red cherries and leaving the rest on the branch for another pass. What she wants from it now is simpler and longer term. Her children are the reason she keeps going, and her hope is that they carry on working the land together, because the land is what keeps them.
