Himyar Subaih does not simply want a bigger farm. He wants to export his own coffee.
He was eleven when he first went into the terraces with his father, given the easy jobs first, watering and helping with the harvest. He remembers the moment it took hold. "When I held the cherries in my hand, it felt as if the land was welcoming me home." Thirty five years later his father is still the person he is closest to on the farm.
His eleven terraces carry trees from three hands: some planted by his grandfather, some by his father, the newest by him. He adds fifty seedlings every year without fail, watering from spring sources and the rainwater reservoirs that hold the season over.
Qima has worked with him since 2019, and he has been in the auction since the very first one in 2020, placing sixth in 2021. He keeps planting regardless of how any given season turns out. "When I look at my farm today," he says, "it's like watching one of my sons grow up."
