Mohammed Zidan · Single Farmer Lot · Deep Fermentation · SL28 · Bani Ofair, Maghrib Ans, Dhamar
Mohammed Zidan won the 2023 Best of Yemen. His lot took first place and sold for four hundred and forty four dollars a pound, the highest price of that auction.
He grew up beside his father in Bani Zaidan and has never spent a season away from coffee. Forty years on, his trees run from one to forty years old, the oldest inherited from his grandfather. He never went to school. Everything he knows about coffee he learned on the terraces.
What the win changed was recognition. His name and the name of his valley became known, in the village and well beyond it, and the price he is paid now bears some relation to the work he puts in. That was not true before.
This lot is SL28, deep fermented, the ripest cherries slow dried for more than thirty days. SL28 was identified in Kenya in the 1930s from drought resistant material and has adapted closely to Yemen's dry, high mountains, where it will keep producing on very little. Water has been severely short in recent seasons, and it remains the constraint that decides his year.
