"Espejo · José Posada · Double Washed · Ethiopian Heirloom · Capilla del Rosario, Medellín, Antioquia
Espejo means mirror, and it is the most precise work to come off Capilla del Rosario this year. The Ethiopian Heirloom lot scored 90.12 points, third in the collection.
The farm sits in the mountains around Medellín and has been in production for more than a century. José Posada tends 45 hectares between 1,650 and 2,000 metres, with 75,000 productive trees and 26 Arabica varieties kept as a living genetic library. The slopes are steep, the rains make moving coffee hard work, and labour for harvest and processing is difficult to find. The response has been gradual investment in infrastructure and processing adapted plot by plot.
This lot was grown at 1,850 metres. Whole cherries fermented for 72 hours. The coffee was then depulped and fermented for a further 48 hours before the coffee was washed and dried on raised beds for two weeks.
The cup brings blueberry, peach and mango with a cool lift of eucalyptus, a sparkling, wine like brightness and a finish of bubblegum sweetness. In José's words, the aim was an expression that is different, carefully crafted and faithful to its origin."
