"Alameda · Jarol Andrés Velasco Ruiz · Double Washed · Geisha · Alameda, Balboa, Cauca
Jarol Andrés Velasco Ruiz was fifteen when he decided he wanted to do something different with coffee. His washed Geisha from Alameda, at 1,800 metres in Balboa, Cauca, scored 88.09 points.
Jarol has run the farm since 2010, after years working alongside his father. On his three hectares he chose to plant Geisha, a variety known for being demanding and giving modest yields, on the understanding that careful work would be repaid in the cup. Harvest is a family job, with only fully ripe cherries picked by hand.
The lot was not grown with a competition in mind. Its path to the auction began when a buyer in Popayán confirmed its quality. For Jarol, the Collection is a chance to show what Balboa can produce and to build a name for his coffee beyond the region.
The process is a classic double fermentation. Whole cherries rest for 24 hours, then the coffee is depulped and ferments for a second 24 hours in its own mucilage before slow sun drying. The cup is orange and pomelo with pear and green apple, a savoury hint of tomato and a caramel base."
