"La Siria · Anibal Sanchez Burbano · Washed · Geisha · La Siria, La Unión, Nariño
This Geisha was picked during an El Niño drought that gave La Unión three days of rain in six months. Anibal Sanchez Burbano took it from the second picking, just before the dry spell took full hold of the trees, and it scored 88.77 points.
The lot comes from a new hillside plot at 1,700 metres, where Anibal has planted Geisha alongside other high value varieties. It is part of a longer project: he is working to reunite his family's land, three generations in the making, under its original name, La Siria, and hopes one day to own the plot outright. He and his wife entered the auction to put their work in front of international buyers. His ambition is recognition rather than volume.
The cherries were picked at a deep, even grape colour. Fermentation came in two stages: 24 hours in whole cherry, then 24 hours after depulping in sealed plastic bags. The coffee was washed with a single pass of water and dried slowly on raised beds, a method Anibal uses to keep the parchment intact and protect the aromatics.
The cup opens on jasmine, moves through orange, apricot and fig, and finishes on black tea and a long honey sweetness."
