Much of the land the Al Ofairi family farms does not belong to them. They rent it, work it as carefully as if it were theirs, and put the proceeds towards a different goal: bringing their own ground into production.
That is harder than it sounds. Terraces left idle do not simply grow coffee again. The walls have to be rebuilt and the soil restored before a seedling is worth planting, and all of that has to be paid for before a single cherry comes off it. It is the reason the family's own land has stayed empty while they tend someone else's.
What they have in the meantime is a stand of trees about thirty years old at around 1,800 metres, with sorghum on the same terraces, worked by the whole household, women and children included. Kent grows well on this dry volcanic ground.
Specialty coffee has made a measurable difference to what the family earns, which is what makes the plan for their own land more than an idea. Qima has worked in Bani Ofair since 2021, building rainwater reservoirs, supplying seedlings and training farmers, and buys from the community every season.
