Zumba sits at the southern tip of Ecuador, in the canton of
Chinchipe, Zamora Chinchipe — a province that occupies the
ecological bridge between the Andes and the Amazon. The name
Chinchipe comes from the Shuar word for bejuco, a vine that grows
along the Mayo-Chinchipe river running north to south through the
canton. This river, and the forests that line it, define the
landscape that coffee grows in here.
Coffee has deep roots in the Zumba area. The Bracamoros Coffee
Fair — named for the Amazonian indigenous tribes who first
settled the banks of the Mayo-Chinchipe — has been running
for over a decade, selecting the best lots from the region and
providing one of the few organised specialty channels available to
producers in this remote corner of the country. Before Ecuador's
northern estates began drawing international attention, the
southern provinces of Loja and Zamora Chinchipe were synonymous
with the country's coffee identity — small family plots,
traditional varieties, and production shaped more by heritage than
by market incentive.
At 1,600 masl, Zumba sits within the higher band of Zamora
Chinchipe's elevation range, where cooler temperatures and the
influence of surrounding forest create conditions well suited to
Washed processing. This Sidra Bourbon lot — jasmine, lemon
zest, green apple — reflects both the clarity of the process
and the restrained, structured character the region produces when
post-harvest handling is done with precision.
