Gilberto Ramiro Mejia - Typica Mejorado
Rancho Tio Emilio - 9085
6
Gilberto Ramiro Mejía Reyes is 42 years old, a
first-generation producer, and has been farming coffee for around
15 years in La Perla, Nanegal — the north of Pichincha
province. Rancho Emilio, as the farm is known, was not named by
Gilberto — the name came with the land. All 7 hectares are
under coffee production at approximately 1,200 to 1,300 masl.
Varieties are primarily Typica, with some hybrids. Climate has
been wetter than usual recently, though Gilberto describes the
conditions as generally well-suited to coffee. Labour and
infrastructure present no significant difficulties; drying capacity
is sufficient, and yields have reached 25 to 30 quintals per
hectare in productive years. Processing is standardised across the
farm — Gilberto applies the same Washed protocol to all lots
consistently.
He entered this competition to build on the recognition that
Ecuadorian coffee has already achieved nationally and
internationally, and to keep improving year by year. His advice to
other producers: specialty requires rigour at every stage from
planting to harvest. This Typica Mejorado Washed lot scored 88.42,
placing sixth overall.
