Augosto Soto
Virgen De Asuncion - 4578
2
José Augusto Soto Vargas is 33 years old and a
second-generation producer in Gonzanamá, Loja. His father
grew coffee before him, but not at scale; Augosto re-engaged with
the land and, five years ago, committed fully to specialty
production. He named the farm Finca Virgen de la Asunción
after the patron saint of his community in the Yambil Alto
neighbourhood.
The farm sits between 1,900 and 2,200 masl — one of the
wider elevation ranges of any single farm in this competition.
Coffee is grown alongside orange, lemon, guaba, and vanilla, on a
hectare and a half of actively producing plots with more land
available for expansion. Climate in the sector is variable:
alternating sun and rain, with occasional frost damage affecting
harvests.
Augosto selected the largest, fully ripe red cherries for this
lot, fermented them whole for one day before pulping, then
fermented again for 48 hours. He entered this competition to access
new markets and establish a commercial relationship with
international buyers. This Typica Mejorado / Sidra Washed lot
scored 90.00 — second in the competition.
